Digital PBX vs. Analog PBX: Which One Is Better?

In the past, businesses used analog phone lines. These days, however, many companies – both large and small – are beginning to switch over to digital PBX (Private Business Exchange). The difference between analog and digital is quite complex. Vocalocity offers its VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone services to small businesses only, and it is our goal that you understand the underlying discrepancies between the two so you can make an educated decision in the phone system you choose.

Analog Signal

In short, analog is a process by which audio signals – such as a person’s voice – are converted into electric pulses. Analog was introduced several decades ago, and many businesses are accustomed to this type of phone system. Typically, electronic devices that use analog signals, such as a telephone or television – are cheaper; however, they don’t have the capability of holding a significant amount of data.  And while the device itself may be cheaper, services can be must more pricey.

Digital PBX Format

A digital PBX phone system is far different from an analog signal. VoIP phones operate over the Internet, so when a person talks into the speaker, his or her voice is broken into a series of 0s and 1s; in digital format, the voice is translated, coded and reassembled so the recipient can understand what’s being communicated. The great thing about digital technology is that space is virtually limitless – it can hold a lot more 0s and 1s than the amount of data an analog signal can hold. In other words, you get extreme clarity without distorted sounds or images.

Soon after digital PBX systems were introduced, they received quite a bit of criticism. Calls were often dropped if the broadband connection was weak, and sound quality was poor at times. The good news is significant advancements have since been made in VoIP technology, and what was once considered a mediocre system has now become the format of the future.

For these reasons and many more, a digital PBX phone system is the better choice for today’s small business. At Vocalocity, we offer telephone support from VoIP consultants, and we are continuously breaking new ground in VoIP technology. As the leader in the industry, we continue pushing for greatness and strive to meet your business’s communication needs. Want more information?
